Before you launch a website for your trade business -- or before you decide whether your existing one is worth keeping -- run through this checklist. It covers everything a tradesman website needs to bring in enquiries from Google.
Be honest with yourself. A tick-box exercise against a bad website is just as useful as building the right one.
Structure and Page Count
- Does the site have a dedicated page for every service you offer?
- Does it have a dedicated page for every town or area you cover?
- Does it have combination pages (e.g. 'boiler repair Portsmouth', 'bathroom fitting Fareham')?
- Is the total page count above 50? Above 100? Above 200?
- Are pages logically organised with clean URLs (e.g. /boiler-repair-portsmouth)?
A site with 5 pages and a site with 200 pages are not comparable. One gives Google 5 things to rank. The other gives Google 200.
On-Page SEO
- Does every page have a unique, keyword-targeted title tag (under 60 characters)?
- Does every page have a unique meta description (under 155 characters)?
- Does every page have one clear H1 heading containing the main keyword?
- Are H2 and H3 headings used to structure content logically?
- Does the page content naturally include the target keyword and related phrases?
- Is there at least 250-300 words of genuine content on every page?
Technical SEO
- Does the site load in under 3 seconds on mobile? (Check: Google PageSpeed Insights)
- Is the site mobile-responsive and easy to use on a phone?
- Does the site have an HTTPS certificate (URL starts with https://)?
- Is there a sitemap.xml submitted to Google Search Console?
- Is the site connected to Google Search Console?
- Are there any broken links or 404 errors?
- Are images compressed and do they have descriptive alt text?
Contact and Conversion
- Is the phone number visible in the header on every page?
- Is the phone number a click-to-call link on mobile?
- Is there a contact form on key pages?
- Is there a clear call to action on every page ('Call for a free quote', 'Request a callback')?
- Is it possible to contact you within 2 clicks from any page?
- Is there a WhatsApp link or button for mobile users?
Trust and Credibility
- Does the site display any customer reviews or testimonials?
- Are any trade accreditations shown (Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, Federation of Master Builders)?
- Is there a photo of you or your team?
- Does the site show examples of completed work?
- Is there an About page or section that establishes who you are?
- Does the site mention how many years you've been in business?
Local SEO Signals
- Is your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) consistent across the site, Google Business Profile, and any directories?
- Does the site mention your service areas by name on relevant pages?
- Is there a Google Maps embed or link on your contact page?
- Are you linked to from any local directories or partner websites?
Google Business Profile (Separate from the Website)
- Do you have a verified Google Business Profile?
- Is the primary category the most specific description of your main service?
- Are all services listed individually in the services section?
- Is your profile getting 2-4 new reviews per month?
- Are you posting at least once a week?
How Does Your Website Score?
If you ticked fewer than half of these, your website is likely not bringing in the enquiries it could be. The most common gaps are: not enough pages, no location targeting, and no on-page SEO.
These aren't difficult problems to fix -- but they do require rebuilding or significantly expanding the site. Our £59/month tradesman website is built to tick every box on this list from day one.
