WhatsApp AI Lead Follow-Up: Permissions Before Messages
WhatsApp lead follow-up with AI should only continue conversations people have chosen to start or have agreed to receive, and it should not be used for unsolicited outreach. Settle permissions, wording and opt-outs first, and keep a person approving what is sent.
Permission comes before automation
Ask where each contact came from and what they agreed to. Someone who messages your business on WhatsApp has opened a conversation. Someone who filled in a form may have agreed to a specific kind of contact, or may not. A list of numbers collected elsewhere is not permission. WhatsApp Business also has its own rules about message types and opt-in, so check the current terms for the account you use, and take advice if you are unsure.
What a sensible workflow looks like
- Reply to inbound messages with approved wording and ask the questions you need.
- Record the conversation against the lead in your own system.
- Draft a follow-up where the customer has agreed to hear from you.
- Stop immediately when someone asks not to be contacted.
- Pass anything sensitive or unclear to a person.
Hypothetical worked example
Consider a driving school whose website has a button opening a WhatsApp chat. The agreed workflow responds to anyone who taps it, asking whether they want lessons for themselves or someone else, their area and preferred weekday. The instructor sees a summary and replies personally. If a learner goes quiet, the workflow may prepare one gentle reminder within the same conversation, for approval, and then stops. It never messages numbers bought, scraped or taken from old lists. An opt-out word ends all automated messages and logs the request. This example is invented.
Testing and approval
Test with your own phone first. Check opt-out handling, odd characters, voice notes and messages sent late at night. Keep approval on until the behaviour is predictable, and review it again if the channel’s rules change.
Honest limits
What can be done depends on the account type, tools, access, scope agreed and monitoring. There is no promise of instant replies, autonomous quotes or guaranteed bookings.
Questions people ask
Can AI message my old customer list?
Only if those people have agreed to receive that kind of message through that channel. Otherwise, do not.
What if someone says stop?
The workflow should stop at once, record it and never message them again unless they restart the conversation.
Do I need WhatsApp Business?
Often yes, but it depends on your setup and volume. This is checked during scoping.

Bring one repeated task. Costs are agreed after the scope is clear, and no result is promised in advance.
