How to Rank on Google Maps in 2 Weeks (For Tradesmen and Small Businesses)

Most tradesmen don't realise that Google Maps and Google Search are two completely separate ranking systems. Your website ranking has almost nothing to do with where you appear on the map. And for local searches -- 'plumber near me,' 'electrician in Portsmouth,' 'roofer Fareham' -- the map is where most people click.

The good news: ranking on Google Maps is faster and more achievable than ranking on Google Search. Here's the complete process -- the same one that gets most tradesmen into the top 3 within a fortnight.

Why Google Maps Matters More Than Your Website

When someone searches for a local tradesman, Google shows the map pack first -- three local businesses with their ratings, address, and contact details. These listings get the majority of clicks. People see them before they see any website results.

Most tradesmen have a neglected Google Business Profile sitting there getting zero enquiries while they pay Checkatrade £80+ per shared lead. Fixing that profile costs nothing except time.

I fixed my category on a Monday. By Wednesday I was in the top 3. First enquiry came the same day. -- Chris R., roofer, West Sussex

Step 1: Fix Your Primary Category

This is the single most impactful change you can make -- 30 seconds. Your primary category tells Google what you are. Go to your Google Business Profile, click Edit Profile, then Business Category.

If you're a plumber and your category says 'Contractor' -- you are invisible for plumbing searches. Set it to the most specific version of your main service:

  • Plumber (not 'Plumbing Contractor')
  • Electrician (not 'Electrical Contractor')
  • Roofer (not 'Construction Company')
  • Heating Contractor for boiler specialists

Then add secondary categories for everything else you do. A plumber might add 'Heating Contractor,' 'Bathroom Remodeler,' and 'Boiler Installation Service.'

Step 2: Complete Every Section

Business Description

Write 750 characters describing what you do, where you do it, and why you're the right choice. Include your main service keywords and the towns you cover -- naturally, not stuffed. Google reads this.

Services Section

List every single service with individual descriptions. Don't just put 'Plumbing' -- list 'Boiler Installation,' 'Emergency Call-Outs,' 'Bathroom Installation,' 'Leak Detection,' 'Central Heating.' Each service is another keyword signal.

Service Area

Set your service area to include every town you cover. If you cover 15 towns, list all 15. Google Maps uses this to decide whether to show you for searches in those areas.

Step 3: Photos -- Quality and Consistency

Profiles with photos get significantly more direction requests and clicks than those without. More importantly, an active profile with regular new photos signals to Google that the business is operating.

  • Upload at least 10 photos to start: exterior, team, work in progress, completed jobs, any awards
  • Add new photos weekly -- even just one from a recent job
  • Name photo files with keywords before uploading (e.g. boiler-installation-portsmouth.jpg not IMG_4521.jpg)
  • Make sure photos are well-lit and clearly show the work

Step 4: Google Posts -- Weekly, Every Week

Google Posts are short updates that appear on your profile. Most businesses never use them. That's your advantage. Post once a week -- 100-150 words and a photo. Use the 'What's New' post type.

Example: 'Just completed a full bathroom renovation in Fareham -- new shower enclosure, heated towel rail, and full tiling. If you're updating your bathroom this year, give us a call for a free quote. We cover all of Hampshire.'

That mentions the service, the location, and has a call to action. Five minutes. Repeat every week.

Step 5: Review Velocity

Google Maps rankings are heavily influenced by reviews -- but not just the total number. Velocity matters. A profile getting 2-3 new reviews every month will outrank one with 50 reviews that hasn't had one in a year.

Ask immediately after completing a job. Send a direct link via WhatsApp or text:
